During the final decade of the last century, Health Care Scenario of Puducherry and nearby areas was abysmal. Despite the presence of JIPMER and Indra Gandhi Govt General Hospital, the public at large in Puducherry were craving for prompt & quality Tertiary Care set up.
Establishment of East Coast Hospitals Ltd in 1990’s was an attempt to fulfill this need. Dr. N. Murugesan, then a young Nephrologist trained under Padmavibhushan Dr. M.K. Mani of Apollo Hospital, had the opportunity to be part of the medical team treating Late Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Bharat Ratna M. G. Ramachandran.
Dr. N. Murugesan had the good fortune to accompany Dr. M G R to the United States of America in connection with his treatment & accompanied as Personal Physician for Her Excellency, The Lt. Governor of Puducherry, Mrs. Rajendra Kumari Bajpai for her treatment abroad.
This was an opportunity to get a first hand information of the facilities and quality of medical care in the most developed part of the world. This inspired Dr. N. Murugesan to strive to set up a tertiary care facility similar to those prevailing in the USA.
Establishment of East Coast Hospitals Ltd in 1990’s and building it up to the present level is in fulfillment of his vision. Since inception, the hospital group has expanded to four units operating in Puducherry and Tamilnadu.
