Neonatology

What is Neonatology?

Neonatology is a specialty of pediatric medicine dealing with the medical management of newborn infants, particularly premature or critically ill newborns in need of higher support during the initial days after birth. Neonatology is concerned with the observation and treatment of birth-related complications, underdeveloped organs, respiratory distress, infection, and other conditions that are life-threatening and can occur during the initial 28 days of life.

Our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at East Coast Hospitals is fully equipped with state-of-the-art technology and specializes in round-the-clock, life-saving care for your baby’s healthiest beginning from a team of experienced neonatologists, neonatal nurses, and pediatric specialists.

Who Requires Neonatal Care?

Your baby will require specialized neonatal care in the NICU if he/she:

  • Is born prematurely (before 37 weeks)
  • Had a low birth weight or small size
  • Suffers from breathing troubles or requires respiratory therapy
  • Suffers birth trauma or complications at the time of delivery
  • Presents with congenital anomalies or birth defects
  • Presents with signs of infection or sepsis
  • Requires surgery soon after birth
  • Must undergo phototherapy for jaundice
  • Is part of a multiple pregnancy (twins, triplets, etc.)
  • Has been born via a high-risk or preterm pregnancy

Our neonatal care and early interventions can be the difference between life and death in the first days and hours of life.
